$1.4 Million of Legal Services Delivered to Nonprofits
in Texas C-BAR’s First Three Years

Austin, Texas - For over 20 years, the Guadalupe Neighborhood Development Corporation (GNDC) has been helping families acquire affordable homes, making home improvement loans, and reviving the old neighborhood and proud history of this East Austin Guadalupe Neighborhood. Three years ago, a new resource opened up for this dynamic community-based nonprofit.

Texas Community Building with Attorney Resources (Texas C-BAR), then a fledgling project of Legal Aid of Central Texas, matched Mark Mouritsen, an attorney in Dell Computer Corporation's legal department, with GNDC in a year-long Community Counsel Partnership. Mr. Mouritsen handled real estate, employment, and other business legal issues that arose during that year at no cost to the nonprofit. In addition to the Community Counsel Partnership, Texas C-BAR has provided GNDC with five other pro bono referrals since 2000.

To celebrate this and other success stories, Texas C-BAR is throwing its 3rd Annual Community Block Party on October 15th in the Guadalupe Neighborhood's Azul Restaurant. Along with food and live music, Texas C-BAR will honor those law firms and individual attorneys who made outstanding contributions this year to the success of community-based organizations through their commitment to Texas C-BAR's business law pro bono program. 2003 Community Builder Awards will go to the law firms of Haynes and Boone, LLP; Bickerstaff, Heath, Smiley, Pollan, Kever, & McDaniel, LLP (Austin); and the legal department of Reliant Resources, Inc (Houston). Also recognized will be the following outstanding attorney volunteers: James Gordon of Winstead Sechrest & Minick PC (Fort Worth); Morgan Sheinberg Warren of King & Spalding, LLP (Houston); and Mark Mouritsen of Dell Computer Corporation (Austin).

Azul Restaurant is located at 1808 East Cesar Chavez in Austin's Guadalupe Neighborhood. The Block Party will be held from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. For more information, call (512)447-7707, ext. 354.
