Fifth Ward Enrichment Program strives to empower boys of the Fifth Ward, one of Houston’s most economically distressed neighborhoods, to become responsible men and productive members of their families and community. For the past four years, Vinson & Eklins has provided their support for this program in a Community Counsel Partnership with the nonprofit. Johnson recounted recently how “they helped us stay out of legal limbo with Texas Workforce Commission. They’ve assisted us greatly with our hiring practices.”
Vinson & Elkins’ most recent contribution to Texas C-BAR is the February Legal Minute. This summary of the legal issues surrounding copyrights and publications provides a useful and necessary resource for nonprofits in a complex area of the law. Over the last six years, Vinson & Elkins has taken 66 different cases covering a variety of legal issues. “The firm’s in-kind donation allowed program dollars to continue to directly benefit those who need services,” noted Beth Atherton, executive director of Caritas of Austin. Vinson & Elkins “helped Caritas put all the legal pieces in place to be able to launch an earned income project that aligns itself with Caritas’ mission of helping families and individuals become self-sufficient.” A Texas original, Vinson & Elkins started in Houston in 1917. It now has offices in 12 cities in six countries and more than 750 attorneys worldwide. Texas C-BAR recognizes Vinson & Elkins for its leadership and dedication to pro bono.
