Community BuilderMay 2007 ExxonMobil“Microentreprenuers have varied legal needs, but one of the most commonly unmet areas of need is in the realm of intellectual property,” explained LAMP staff attorney, Andrea Beleno. Because she had little knowledge in this area of the law, Beleno needed a mentor to give a thorough introduction. Darryl Tyus of ExxonMobil, provided the introductory orientation on intellectual property law, focusing especially on patent law, along with specific assistance to a low-income client. Tyus was a great instructor, bringing understanding and excitement to this type of volunteer activity. Beleno recounted how “One LAMP client, a self-taught computer programmer, needed help to protect a computer program he had written. Tyus interviewed and advised the client of his legal options for the protection of his intellectual property.” After the referral, Tyus wrote that, “The experience was rewarding and offered an opportunity for me and Exxon Mobil to help the small business community. I look forward to working with Texas C-BAR again.” LAMP provides legal assistance to low-income individuals who are starting or trying to sustain their own small businesses. While the program has been around for nearly a year and a half, it has recently grown beyond the capabilities of the sole staff attorney and has begun referring cases out for pro bono assistance. This growth also allows for matters to be accepted that need specialized assistance, such as for intellectual property. “It is always great to have a LAMP client receive IP advice and assistance from an attorney with experience in that specific field;” Beleno voiced. And, “Mr. Tyus was great at getting the information he needed from the client, particularly since he also had to deal with some language barriers. The client was thrilled with the outcome, and has a much better understanding of his rights and responsibilities as to his product.” Volunteer attorneys from ExxonMobil’s Houston-based corporate legal department have partnered with Texas C-BAR since 2004, helping Texas C-BAR publish the “Nonprofit Guide To Employment Law Issues in Texas”, incorporating new nonprofit organizations, and advising established nonprofits how to maintain compliance with the laws. Peggy Montgomery, Chair of ExxonMobil’s Pro Bono Committee and a new member of the Texas C-BAR board, explained that, “One of Exxon Mobil Corporation’s ‘Guiding Principles’ is to be a good corporate citizen in all the communities where the company does business. This is evident here in Texas, where ExxonMobil’s Law Department has been a pro bono leader in the corporate law community.” As a leader in this area, they are continually expanding their contributions of legal services. We look forward to working with Tyus and all the volunteer attorneys from ExxonMobil for years to come. |
